Pretty Woman Commentary

It just dawned on me this afternoon that in my rush to upload this commentary to youtube on Tuesday evening, I failed to actually post it to my blog.

My bad.

I chose Pretty Woman as the subject of my commentary because it is really one of the earliest romantic comedies I can remember seeing. At first I thought that was weird because it's all about a hooker. But then I got to thinking about how really it's not a movie about prostitution at all-- it's about dreams and personal agency and the courage to change what you don't like in yourself. So there, naysayers ;)

  1. commentary on your commentary:
    "affairs"...good call Sadie ;)
isn't it her job to generate chemistry?
The cassette tape definitely dates the film.
    You would love the bath...
I agree about the shopping scene; she's pretty sassy there.
I've never had the money to shop there! Am I supposed to sympathize with her in that regard?
Her outfit with the hat is *terrible* but I kind of like the brown dress in the "fight scene."
Richard Gere comes across as a creepy serial killer type. I think it's the low quiet voice.
This movie is *just* like My Fair Lady!

  3. This is great movie and there are so many parts to be talked about! You picked some great ones to point out, the singing in the tub and the jumping on the bed. I enjoyed watching this little version of the movie a lot.

  4. I've never seen Pretty Woman, and now I'm surprised that I haven't because it seems like something I would like! Your commentary is very thorough and coherent--and never boring! The department store revenge scene is oh-so-satisfying, and I love the scene where Richard Gere snaps the jewelry case on Julia Roberts' fingers!
